Overview of year 1 of 3 year Leadership Program in Nairobi

Module 2, June 17-20: Inner Work and Conflict, Developing Eldership

This module teaches INNER WORK skills to apply in conflict resolution. We will practice and learn how to remain centered and balanced in conflict situations. We will learn to mentor others in conflict situations without taking sides, so that we can continue to facilitate, and to relate to individuals and groups that don't wish to resolve their conflicts.

We will present coaching methods for personal development in relation to managing and resolving conflicts. Participants will learn how issues that come up in relationships are “non-local”,  meaning disturbances that appear in relationships actually belong to both partners in some way (even if the problem is more apparent in one person) and to the culture or environment at large. This module is meant to assist you with leading and facilitating in situations in which the group or environment is "loosing it" – meaning, the group no longer has access to a linear and rational perspective about the problem. The ability to remain centered is a crucial aspect of our program, as it allows reflection and  the viewpoint needed to use the resolution and facilitation skills that are taught during the second year. This ability is only accessible with ongoing practice.

Module 3, November 26-28: Power, Trauma, and Leadership

Facilitation and power – how to work through your own personal history, and how to recognize and council trauma in others.

This module focuses on working with the difficulties that arise when dealing with stress and pain from traumatizing experiences, illness, violence, or the loss of loved ones. You will learn to notice trauma, stress, and grief in individuals and groups, as well as how to relate to trauma so as not to amplify it, but to use it for deeper community building and vision development. Participants will learn basic Process Oriented grief counseling methods and their application in leadership and facilitation. Traumatized groups and individuals are frequently seen as "difficult" -relating to them is key for an inclusive leadership that minimizes friction and brings unity.

Module 4, Jan 27-30, 2011: Vision, Strategy and Results

We will learn and apply tools to discover your personal vision, and how your personal vision is connected to your team and organizational vision. Individual myth refers to a time and space invariant pattern that expresses itself in individual leadership styles. Our personal myths make us unique, and are the basis of our individual contributions to life on this planet. They also give form to strategies for achieving results. This module crowns the coaching and mentoring year. You will have the opportunity to work together with other participants to complete the final exam. Participants will emerge with self-designed, personalized action plans for themselves and their teams or organizations, and projects of excellence to be completed over the remaining two years.
